Join GBA and JVC to Meet the Badgers UW Men's Basketball event on October 24 at 6:30 PM at the Kohl Center. The event includes a red and white scrimmage followed by a photo and autograph session with the team and coaches. Devil's Lake Hike

Please join Joint Venture Club and the Graduate Business Association for a hike to Devil's Lake State Park one week from today (use the link for directions). Saturday, September 23 at 11:30, we will gather at the park's north side for an afternoon of food and scenic hiking. We will begin to eat at around noon, and hiking will commence after lunch as people feel like it.

About a 45-minute drive west of Madison, the park is free of charge and features a public beach, numerous hiking trails, gorgeous scenery, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and grills. It is a very kid-friendly location and is open to all levels of hiking skill and experience.Joint Venture Club will provide hot dogs and brats, along with all other grilling extras like charcoal, buns, ice, condiments, plates, and utensils. If you would like to attend, please bring either a side dish, desert or drink to share. Please note that alcoholic beverages are NOT allowed in the park.

Since the event is free of charge and requires only a food contribution, the event is open to anyone associated with the UW-Madison MBA program! We hope you and your families can attend!

If you have no vehicle to get to the park, please feel free to use the "comments" section of this post to request rides, or write to Joint Venture Club to arrange a lift.

August MBA Experience Event Details

First, the rain location for tonight's Meet and Greet on the Union Terrace will be inside the Memorial Union at the Rathskeller dining hall. We will be there with balloons or another such sign to let you know where we (Dan and Carrie) are.

Second, following the JVC pizza party on Tuesday night, spouses and partners are invited to join their significant others at the Fluno Center for a reception held in the first floor dining room. The MBAs will be dressed in formal business attire, but the dress code for JVC members is business casual. Please note: the Fluno reception is NOT intended for children.

Need Help With Child Care Costs?

Do you need financial assistance with child care costs while you attend classes at the UW-Madison for the fall 2006 semester? Students must reside in Wisconsin and have licensed child care in Wisconsin.

You may be eligible for financial assistance through the Child Care Tuition Assistance Program (CCTAP). CCTAP provides financial assistance toward child care costs to eligible student parents. Not all students may be eligible.

For more information, eligibility and an application, visit our Web site. In addition, check out the Kids-Kare at Home Program, providing sick, back-up and evening care to eligible CCTAP student parents. We also have new lactation rooms on campus and other parent support programs, all available through the website.

Spring is upon us and the end of this academic year is near. Join us for food, drink, and lively conversation at the newest Chinese restaurant in the area, P F Changs. This will be the last JVC event of the 2005-2006 year, so come out to say good-bye and good luck to all of the second year spouses and partners who will be moving on from their lives here!

A message from the Graduate Business Association Sports Chair, Keven Lofty:

In the fall, I conducted a survey to determine students' preferences for sporting activities that the GBA might help organize. That survey revealed the most popular activities fell into four areas:

Soccer
Golf
Skiing and other Winter Sports
Racquet Sports (Racquetball, Tennis, Badminton)

For the remainder of the year, I will be organizing activities aimed at all skill levels in each of these areas. I would like to create distribution lists for each activity, consisting of students as well as spouses, partners and families, where applicable.

In addition, I would like to thank everyone who came with us on the ski trip to Tyrol Basin and made it such a fantastic success! We hope to organize a similar activity as soon as possible.

The Oscars' Best Picture Update

Nominations for the 78th Annual Academy Awards were released this morning. For complete coverage, use this link. Tonight, our "JVC Goes to the Oscars Film Festival" will see the first of the five best picture nominees, Brokeback Mountain. See details in the sidebar or in the Evite you received last week.

Later this week, theaters will release their showtimes for next Tuesday, when we will gather to see one of the other four nominees for Best Picture: Capote, Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck, or Munich. An Evite will be posted as soon as we have selected a showtime and theater. Hope everyone can make it out to see these great films!

As another update, the showing for the second week of February will be either Monday the 13th or Wednesday the 15th, to avoid competition with Valentine's Day. We are a club that supports spouses, partners, and students, so we wouldn't want to conflict with anyone's romance!

February Bunko Night Update

Bunko Night, which is usually held on the first or second Tuesday of the month, will be canceled for February in order conduct JVC's Night at the Oscars Film Festival. Bunko will return in March at the residence of Katka & Rasty Martos, in Eagle Heights.

In the meantime, plan on seeing Brokeback Mountain with everyone one week from tonight on Tuesday, January 31st, at the Marcus Westgate Art Cinema. Details are in the sidebar under "Upcoming Events," and an Evite will be posted when showtimes are made known.

Then consider attend- ing our first JVC Parents & Kids Play- date! If successful, these parent and child get-togethers could become monthly events!

Please join us at the home of Jenn Ritzema on Saturday, February 11th at 10am as she and Carrie Lofty host Valentine's Day crafts, play, and lunch. Any JVC member with children is invited to attend!

JVC's Night at the Oscars Film Festival

The 78th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 5th at 8pm. In keeping with a successful JVC tradition, we will be gathering in February to view all five of the Best Picture nominees, watching one movie per week at a local theater. On the off chance that one of the nominees has been released on DVD and is no longer in the theaters, we can have a viewing at a member's home.

Because the award nomina- tions will not be announced until January 31st, leaving us only four weeks to view all five films, the first movie to see will most likely be Brokeback Mountain. Its nomination is almost guaranteed after its Golden Globe win. If we see it at the end of January, just before the nominations are announced, we'll have time to view one film per week.

Other possible nominees include films such as The Constant Gardener, Good Night, and Good Luck, A History of Violence, Match Point, and Walk the Line, all of which were also nominated for Best Picture by the Golden Globes.

On the day of the awards, Erin will be hosting an Oscar party dinner where we can root for favorites and predict winners. The party will be for everyone, even if you are unable or uninterested in seeing the films in the theater or with our group.

Happy holidays! Three cheers to the MBA students and their partners, spouses, and children, all of whom worked so hard to complete yet another semester in the UW-Madison Graduate School of Business. If finals week is not yet finished for you and yours, rest assured that we all will be out of our misery within the week and happily enjoying a well- deserved winter break!

We hope that those of you who took time out from your hectic year-end schedules to come to the JVC Holiday Party were not disappointed. With turkey, GARLIC mashed potatoes, homemade pizzas, all manner of salads, appetizers, and cookies, Katka's gorgeous torte, and free-flowing wine, a disappointed reveler would be hard to imagine. Even the little ones were in the holiday spirit, as Ilsa wrestled all comers for cake, Juliette begged Pringles off of everyone she met, and Calvin flirted with the little ladies, generously sharing his toys.

Thanks to everyone for bringing such wonderful food and drink, as well as a healthy dose of holiday cheer. The respite from the daily grind was welcome and wonderful! Thanks to Kelly, Kristine, and Erin for guiding all the newcomers through this turbulent experience and for supporting Dan and Carrie as they work to become JVC's new chief organizers. And a special thanks also goes out to Anita and Laura for the use of Hamilton Place's gorgeous and cozy penthouse community room.

Bunko Night - December

"Bunko Night" remains a misnomer and a mystery, but still a fun night out.

Our lovely host, Kelly Strunk, served a soup and salad dinner to a party of eight, followed by delicious holiday treats. But there was still no Bunko to be had. Let's try again next year! The evening's festivities also included one dog and a few errant, party-crashing spouses. Discussions were diverse and entertaining, as seems to be our specialty, with some talk about the upcoming Holiday Party! Thanks again to Kelly for hosting this month.

Because of the winter recess, Bunko will resume in February. We were so glad to see new faces in attendance last night, and we hope that you can make Bunko (whatever that is!!) a part of your monthly social calendar during 2006!

Our November "Taste of Madison" night was held at the Eldorado Grill on Williamson St. Pre-dinner drinks aided (or perhaps hindered) our navigation of UW-Madison club paper- work as Kelly Weight and Kristine Toppe turned the club's reins over to Dan Tyler and Carrie Lofty. Dinner was delicious, the service was good, the salsa was worthy of purchasing for home use, and we all headed our separate ways following an amicable discussion of group bill-paying etiquette. Dan and Carrie are excited about the future of the club, with a primary goal being publicity and outreach to new, hidden members!

We hope to see more people out for Bunko and our Holiday Party in the coming month!

Bunko Night - November

Many thanks to Kristine for hosting a wonderful Bunko night! She provided a most excellent selection of dishes such as squash soup, roasted chicken, spinach salad, and evil, evil cookies - all served with real silverware and cloth napkins. So posh and so tasty! Bunko will have to wait again... ah well.

We also discussed the upcoming hand-over of JVC leadership, the 2005 Holiday Party, and other considerations to improve our club offerings and attendance. Please make note of the upcoming schedule of events and be on the look out for evites in your mail-box!

Here's a song that I wrote in honor of UW's business school - Grainger Hall! After the release of D-CONSTRUCTION, the album I created about the job I was working on in Tampa, my marginal propensity to record has followed me to Madison. The One Dan Band is the musical manifestation of my creative side, and thanks to digital recording technology, moving across the country doesn't require finding a new band!

The Corn Maze!

The Joint Venture Outing

When: Saturday, October 15 from 4-10pm

Cost: JVC tickets are $15 for adults (ages 12+) and $10 for kids (ages 6-12), which includes admission, food and beer (for the adults!). Children 5 years old and younger are free. You can purchase or reserve tickets from Sara VanderLind, Greg Toppe (260-8201), or Matt Weight (260-8201), at the Graduate Lounge, or make your request via e-mail.

Where: Treinen Farm, five miles west of Lodi on Highway 60.

Directions: From Interstate 90, take the Lodi exit (Highway 60) west. Follow Highway 60 through Lodi, go 5 miles west toward Prairie du Sac. The farm is on the right. From the west side of Madison, take Highway 12 west toward Sauk City. Turn north (right) on Highway P. Follow P about 7 miles to Highway 113. Turn left on 113, go into Lodi and stop at 4-way stop in the downtown. Turn left onto Highway 60, and go five miles. The farm is on the right.

Bunko Night - October

There were no dice anywhere to be seen at Bunko last night. For first-year members, the game remains a mystery to be saved for another month. However, there were a good number of attendees whose spouses are stuck in the throes of interviews, finance (the class rumored to be most difficult for first-years), more net- working than they'll likely ever need, and other time-consuming pursuits. So we all took solace in good music, tasty kebabs, a nice selection of wine, and a few hours of genial conversation. And cupcakes!

A Taste of Madison - September

Did everyone have a great time at the Great Dane on Thursday? Our attendance is still a little sparse as we all work on establishing a school year routine, but those who ate and drank among new friends had a pleasant and relaxing evening. Several partners joined up with their S.O.s for Taps at Genna's Lounge on Main following dinner. Our next event will be a Bunko night on October 4th at Erin & Sara's, with directions & additional info to follow. Thanks to those who attended, and we'll see you in October!
